CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. It is a national-level entrance examination in India conducted for admission to undergraduate law programmes such as 5-year integrated BA LL.B., BBA LL.B., B.Com LL.B., and other similar courses.
These programmes are offered by the National Law Universities (NLUs) and several other law colleges across India. CLAT is conducted once every year by the Consortium of National Law Universities (CNLUs).
Purpose: To select candidates for 5-year integrated undergraduate law programmes after Class 12 (10+2). CLAT scores are used by NLUs and participating law colleges for admission and seat allotment.
Eligibility for UG CLAT (5-Year Law Programme):
- Candidate must have passed 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized board.
- Minimum required marks in 10+2:
- 45% for General / OBC / PWD / NRI / OCI / PIO candidates.
- 40% for SC / ST candidates.
- Candidates appearing in Class 12 (final year) are also eligible, subject to passing the examination at the time of admission.
- No upper age limit for appearing in UG CLAT.
- Mode: Offline (Pen-and-Paper based test)
- Duration: 2 hours (120 minutes)
- Total Questions: 120 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Total Marks: 120 marks
- Marking Scheme:
- ✅ +1 mark for every correct answer
- ❌ –0.25 mark for every incorrect answer (negative marking)
The UG CLAT question paper consists of five sections:
- English Language
- Current Affairs including General Knowledge
- Legal Reasoning
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Techniques (Mathematics)
All sections are passage-based, requiring candidates to read passages and answer related questions.
- English Language: Reading comprehension, inference, vocabulary, summarizing, comparison of viewpoints.
- Current Affairs & General Knowledge: National and international events, history, culture, arts, important contemporary issues.
- Legal Reasoning: Understanding legal principles provided in passages and applying them to given situations. No prior legal knowledge is required.
- Logical Reasoning: Critical reasoning, arguments, assumptions, conclusions, relationships, and analytical thinking.
- Quantitative Techniques: Basic arithmetic, numerical ability, data interpretation, and elementary mathematics.
Application Fee:
- General / OBC / PWD / NRI / OCI / PIO: Approximately ₹ 4,000
- SC / ST / BPL candidates: Approximately ₹ 3,500
- (Fee amount may change each year.)
Result, Counselling & Admission:
- CLAT results are released in the form of a scorecard and merit list.
- Candidates are called for centralized counselling based on rank, category, and preferences.
- Seats are allotted in participating National Law Universities and affiliated law colleges.
- Read newspapers and current affairs daily.
- Practice passage-based reading comprehension regularly.
- Solve previous years’ CLAT question papers.
- Attempt mock tests to improve speed and accuracy.
- Focus strongly on Legal Reasoning and Logical Reasoning sections.
PG CLAT 2026 (Post Graduate Common Law Admission Test) is a national-level entrance examination conducted for admission into LL.M. (Master of Laws) programmes offered by National Law Universities (NLUs) and other participating law colleges in India. The examination is conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities.
Purpose of PG CLAT 2026 is conducted for:
- Admission to LL.M. programmes
- Legal academic and research careers
- Higher specialization in law
- Teaching and advanced legal studies
- Educational Qualification: Candidate must have completed LL.B. (3-Year or 5-Year) degree from a recognized university.
- Minimum Marks Required:
- General / OBC / EWS / PWD / NRI: 50% marks
- SC / ST: 45% marks
- Final Year Students: Candidates appearing in the final year of LL.B. are eligible to apply, subject to fulfillment of eligibility at the time of admission.
- Age Limit: No upper age limit for PG CLAT 2026.

The PG CLAT exam is comprehension-based and tests understanding of law subjects. Questions are mainly passage-based and require analytical and conceptual understanding.

Result & Merit List: Result is declared online. Rank list prepared based on marks obtained. Category-wise merit list published.
Counselling & Seat Allotment: Conducted online by the Consortium. Seats allotted based on Rank, Category, and Preferences of NLUs. Candidates must confirm seats by fee payment and document verification.
Participating Institutes: All National Law Universities (NLUs) and Other participating law colleges accepting CLAT PG scores.
